Skaters from across the world are again invited to this breakthrough skating event at Braehead, Glasgow. The 2017 event will be a pilot World Championships and this will be followed in 2018 by the first Official World Championship. Figure skating and speed skating have never been accepted as Paralympic sports but following the development of the Inclusive Skating system, that day may be coming a little closer. Inclusive Skating events allow all the competitors to be graded according to a judging system that takes full account of any skating impairment and allows all skaters with any form of disability, even multiple impairments to be included.
Margarita Sweeney-Baird, Chair of Inclusive Skating said: “The Inclusive Skating system is truly inclusive and enables all competitors, with and without disabilities, to compete on the same rink, in the same competition.”
The First Inclusive Skating International Club Competition held in Dumfries on May 12th and 13th 2012 was featured in a BBC news report. Since then there have been many successful international events and many more are now in active planning. Come back here for more details.
World Figure Sport invited Inclusive Skating to Canada 2016 for the International Figure Festival of Skating being held on December 19th to 22nd in Toronto during the same week as the 2016 World Figure Championship. The pilot event was a great success and the event was judged by Don Jackson 1962 World Champion and Barbara Wagner 1960 Olympic Champion using the new consensus judging system and forms. The Inclusive Skating judging system system used at Canada 2016 dramatically reduces the costs of running Inclusive Skating events. The risk of judging and officials errors is also reduced. Inclusive Skating looks forward to many more events in the future. A huge vote of thanks to World Figure sport Organisation for the warm welcome and their help.
